Saudi Arabia accused Yemen’s Houthi rebels of attempting a drone strike on Mecca on Tuesday, calling the security of Islam’s holiest city a “red line,” while the Houthis vehemently denied the allegation as a “worn-out lie.” The incident marks the first time since the regional war erupted in February that an emergency alert was issued in Mecca, triggering widespread outrage across the Muslim world and escalating an already volatile conflict that threatens to draw in new regional powers.
The Interception and Saudi Arabia’s Warning
Saudi air defenses intercepted and destroyed a Houthi drone south of Mecca shortly before 7 p.m. local time on Tuesday, according to coalition spokesperson Turki al-Maliki . The drone was destroyed before entering the restricted airspace over the holy city, with debris falling in an unpopulated area . Al-Maliki stated that this was the second Houthi attempt to target Mecca, following a ballistic missile launch in July 2017 . The Saudi-led coalition declared that “the security of the Two Holy Mosques and the pilgrims is a red line” and vowed to take “necessary and deterrent measures” against what it called the “Terrorist Houthi Militia” .
The attack triggered Saudi Arabia’s Civil Defence to issue emergency alerts for Mecca, Jeddah, Taif, and Yanbu, advising residents to move indoors and stay away from windows . This was the first such alert issued in Mecca since the Middle East war erupted in February . The alert was lifted within minutes, but it caused localized panic among residents . One Mecca resident told reporters: “I saw a few people panicking, running to the window to see what happened” .
The Houthi Denial
Houthi officials categorically denied targeting Mecca or any Islamic holy site. Hazem al-Assad, a member of the Houthi politburo, wrote on X: “The claims about targeting Mecca are a worn-out lie that has been used before and no longer fools anyone” . A Houthi military source told Yemen’s SABA news agency that the group posed “no danger” to Islamic holy sites and that its cross-border operations targeted Saudi oil facilities and military bases, which are far removed from sacred sites . Al-Assad further accused the Saudi regime of “desecrating” Mecca itself, saying “it is they who desecrate it with debauchery and licentiousness” .
International Condemnation
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), representing 57 Muslim nations, condemned the “heinous attacks” against Mecca and the Medina region, stating they “violate the sanctity of the two holy sites and Islamic mosques and offend the sentiments of Muslims around the world” . The OIC described attacks on holy sites as terrorism and called such violations “unacceptable and intolerable” .
Turkish Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, reaffirming Ankara’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia and calling for an immediate halt to “escalatory actions that threaten regional stability” . Turkish Communications Director Burhanettin Duran said any assault on Islam’s holy sites “wounds the collective conscience of the Muslim world” .
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned what he called a “dastardly and heinous attempted drone attack,” saying Pakistan stands “unwaveringly, shoulder to shoulder with the brotherly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” . Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had warned days earlier that any unprovoked aggression against Saudi Arabia could activate the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement signed between Pakistan, Turkiye, and Saudi Arabia in August . The pact mirrors NATO’s collective defense principle, though its operational mechanisms have not yet been fully developed .
India’s Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep concern, stating the incident was “particularly concerning given the special significance of the city to Muslims across the world” . Qatar described the alleged attempt as a “disgraceful act of aggression” that “crossed every red line” . The Gulf Cooperation Council’s Secretary-General called it a “terrorist act” and a “provocation against Muslims everywhere” . Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and the Arab League also issued condemnations .
Broader Regional Escalation
The Mecca incident is part of a sharp escalation in Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia over the past week. On September 12, a projectile injured two people and damaged a mosque in Jazan . A day later, ballistic missile and drone attacks on Khamis Mushait, Abha, and Taif wounded 13 civilians and damaged seven homes and two vehicles . The Houthis have also claimed to have shot down a Saudi F-15 fighter jet over Marib province, though the coalition has not confirmed this .
The Houthis have seized control of Yemen’s entire Red Sea coastline, including the strategic Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital artery for Saudi oil exports as the Strait of Hormuz remains largely blocked by Iran . Saudi Arabia’s 1,200-kilometer East-West oil pipeline was shut down after a drone attack launched from Iraq, disrupting a critical alternative route for Saudi crude . Global oil prices have surged above $100 per barrel, with Brent crude trading around $108 .
The United States has raised its travel advisory for Saudi Arabia to Level 3, warning citizens to reconsider travel and barring government employees from near the Yemen border . Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman reportedly requested U.S. military intervention in a call with President Donald Trump, but the request was declined, with Washington limiting support to intelligence-sharing .
The United Nations reports that at least 82,000 people have been displaced by the renewed fighting in Yemen since early September . With Mecca’s “red line” now invoked and the Mecca Defence Pact potentially in play, the conflict risks drawing Pakistan and Turkiye deeper into a war that has already destabilized global energy markets.
